Mixed bag 1
1. The Paper Kites. Too Late
As is often the case I only came across The Paper Kites recently. I was familiar with the band but not their music. A very impressive Australian band that write great, emotive songs. Too Late is a stand out track for me.
2. Mingo Fishtrap. Silver Lining
Jules Keshan recommended Mingo Fishtrap to me. Their album On Time remains on high rotation in my world. The whole album is killer.
3. Donny Hathaway. The Ghetto
I had never listened to Donny Hathaway properly until last year. This live album from 1972 is considered one of the best of all time, and rightfully so. At 12:06 in length The Ghetto is all feel and groove.
4. The Marcus King Band. Rita is Gone
Again Jules Keshan recommended The Marcus King Band to me. Jules introduced me to their track Radio Soldier. This guy will blow your hair back. I include Rita is Gone on this list after searching for Marcus King online and found them playing Rita is Gone on Jam in the Van https://youtu.be/emQiYCr_XZI
Wow. The voice, the songs and the guitar chops are world class. They tour Australia in April.
5. Jon Cleary. So Damn Good
Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen are one of my favourite acts in the world and have been for the last 18 years. We first saw them at the Great Northern Byron Bay in 2000 when we had a night off from recording our own EP at Rockinghorse Studios. We took a punt on them and payed $25 when we couldn’t really afford it. That remains one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and will never forget it.
6. Tully John & Liza Jane. Dust
This Gold Coast duo write and produce raw, delicate songs that sit right next to you. Their Wonder EP from 2017 is gold. Last year I was a judge for the Gold Coast Music Awards and this band was my pick.
7. John Fullbright. Moving
I discovered John Fullbright by accident as I randomly streamed for new music. This song stands out for its raw, live feel and clever lyrics. A great songwriter.
8. Amos Lee. Keep it Loose, Keep it Tight
I discovered Amos Lee through the Blue Note label and was immediately drawn in. Amos Lee was my favourite artist for a long time. I was fortunate to see him play at the Basement in Sydney. A truly great songwriter.
9. Augie March. The Mothball
Glenn Richards is in my opinion one of the greatest songwriters in Australia, and the world for that matter. This is an early Augie March track from their 1999 Waltz EP. Asleep in Perfection was the first and biggest track from the EP, the Mothball is the last track and my favourite. It’s clever, delicate and it soars.
10. Martin Sexton. Glory Bound
I’ve for a long time been familiar with Martin Sexton but hadn’t really delved into his music. I stumbled upon Glory Bound from his 1996 Black Sheep record. This is a vocal/acoustic version. It’s honest, real, close and vulnerable as his falsetto delivers the chorus.
